New Textile Work
Susan Wirth
My work often explores the connection to family and culture through our relationship to materials handed down and passed on through generations.
I view each blanket not just as a formal object, aesthetically modernist in composition and design but as a cultural relic, embedded with a sense of belonging and connection to family.
Guided by the internal logic of warp and weft, the geometric horizontal and vertical colour structures of each blanket, I use a method of drawing and cutting to create new patterns and rhythms. They become reconfigured maps of unknown destinations, interrupted signals and new forms in space to enter, view and orbit.
